who is a lamplighter?

Back in the time before we had electric street lights we had gas lamps. They would line the streets and be personally lit by one man. The glass lamps usually stood about 8 feet high and had a glass enclosure at the top. A young man with a small ladder would start out every evening and slowly light each gas lamp and then again every dawn he would follow that same route and extinguish the lights. Lighting these lamps was time consuming, you had to walk to each light, set up your ladder and light the lamp. Since some of these street lamps did not have an underground gas source, the lamplighter had to carry the gas with him. Also, I am sure they did not all light on the first try. Let's not forget to think of the different inclements of weather too. I can just picture the scene and how it looks. A familiar friendly face that offered a warm glow on the streets. That warm fuzzy glow of lights starting to take over the blackness that would have enveloped everyone. How comforting I think it would have been every evening looking for the face of the lamplighter knowing that he would provide a much needed comfort. Are you a lamplighter?
